yesterday we did the first going mobile event.
experimenting with secondlife, mobile broadcasting, livestreaming
some thing worked pretty well, the mobile-broadcasting livestream over umts/hsdpa from the cologne city into the studio, for example. other things not. but it was quite funny and we learned much about broasdcasting, mobile -units and we had some really nice images from cologne-city.
the whole info plus first doku is on the project-webside:

lots of people have used the awesome www.mmogchart.com for information on the MMOG market which was created and maintained by SirBruce for many years, however since 2006 SirBruce has not updated the site.
in the tradition of mmogchart.com now mmogdata.com plans to continue the work of SirBruce.
great! good luck and success from meta-unlimited.com

open-sourcing the secondlife-backend so sims can run anywhere on any machine whether trusted by lindenlab ro not
The following news i found on zdnet.com is a little bit older but still important, as i think the biggest problem of secondlife is the proprietary format of the whole system.
It refers to a blogentry from 3pointD.com about "Platforms and Technologies Panel at VW07".
Pretty much the most interesting bit of this came at the very end, from Joe Miller, vp for platform and technology development at Linden Lab, makers of the virtual world of Second Life:
• We’ll be open-sourcing the back end so sims can run anywhere on any machine whether trusted by us or not.
• We’ll be delivering assets in a totally different method that won’t be such a burden on the simulators.
• Very soon we’ll be updating simulators to support multiple versions so that we don’t have to update the entire Grid at once.
• We’ll be using open protocols.
• SL cannot truly succeed as long as one company controls the Grid.
"Having already taken the timid steps of open-sourcing the code for its client software, Linden Lab have confirmed that they'll be going the whole way, and will soon be opening up the server code for Second Life. This is big news, as it furthers Second Life's ambitions to be a fully distributed 3D network — built on interoperability and not owned by one company — a bit like the Internet itself. However, while these are much grander plans than simply being a provider of a proprietary 3D world (there are after all an increasing number of competitors), it begs the question of how Linden Lab plans to make money?
Right now, Linden generates most of its revenue through selling 'virtual land' a.k.a. server space and licensing the software needed.
Fellow ZDNet blogger, Dana Blankenhorn, asks whether this could in fact save Second Life? citing a number of different directions Linden Lab could go in, including:
Additionally, it will be interesting to see who is first to offer Second Life hosting or use the server code for their own internal purposes. IBM would be an obvious candidate, perhaps offering corporate SL services. And for the rest of us? "GoogleLife", free virtual land — ad supported of course. It's certainly a possibility."

the next project i am planing is the thegoingmobileevent.de
but there are plenty of other projects worldwide with a focus on a similiar field, the description varies between mixed, augmented or hybrid reality.
there is an article on the electricsheep-blog, just take a look. they are doing the 10-day-destroy-television-show which sounds quite nice.i truly have to admit, electric sheep have been real early adpaters in the field of mixing the stages, when they did a mixed reality event in february 2006 in a bar and sl.
this is a link to the VirtuaLive mixed reality concert that happened in New York earlier this month, organized by Adam Broitman from virtuallivetv.
and i really like this one: the mixed reality monday by Tateru Nino. just take a look :) ...

Gartner tech analysts pronounced that by the end of 2011, 80% of active internet users will spend a substantial amount of time in virtual worlds. Earlier this year, a few bloggers, including myself, tried to picture Second Life in the context of Gartner's Hype Cycle--my biggest concern was whether SL's platform would hold out long enough to reach Gartner's "Plateau of Productivity." Perhaps latching on to IBM's "gameframe" quickly enough, Linden Lab can buy a second life for Second Life.

the documentation of the i buy everything event for download in pdf-format.
the ‚i buy everything event‘ was an event in the tradition of the happenings, extended by 21st century communication-technology.
the purpose of the experiment was to connect the digital world of secondlife with the nondigital
world - and vice versa in order to generate an open hybridspace.
generating hybridspace with the tools of the popculture or opening public space in the spectacular-space with the tools of the artists.

how to entertain people in secondlife?
"Jayce Logan: On Assignment – Smokin’ Aces Second Life Assassin
It’s not everyday you’re approached with an offer to be a hired gun, but that’s exactly what I found in my inbox when I checked my e-mail this afternoon. I was told L$1,000,000 was up for grabs and all I’d have to do was sign up and strategically place little bits of lead into the skulls of some other people. Hey, for a cool million? Who’d turn that down? "

looking at the hype around secondlife it would be pretty naive to believe this plattform would be and stay the unique social virtual reality project. i would not be very surprised if anywhere in silicon valey or another part of the international, some venture capital fed nerds would work on the the next secondlife.
yesterday sony presented the new 3d-world home a mix of microsofts live, the sims and parts and secondlife. lets keep in mind, that sony has great experiences with the field of mmorg with games like everquest or star wars galaxy. i am higly curious what we can expect from japan as next in this field. the grafic looks great and secondlife ist years behind to this.
i think the introduction of sonys new world is good occasion to take a short look around the world of metaverse-projects.
here you get the vidoe for download if desired: home.mov

science-fiction cyberspace and secondlife go close together
on reuters you can find a short summary about the different ficitional roots of sl. from gibsons neuromancer to neal stephensons snowcrash.some links to sci-fi places like 'nexus prime' and 'suffugium' in secondlife are mentioned.
so if you are intersted in a virtual-reality which is not orientated on an american suburb square dream take a look.
is this cyber-trash the model for secondlife?

today i found 3 projects and took a little look:
i know, i know, nothing really new. i should have taken a look for a while into 'there.com', at least to know if it is intersting for a further investigattion. i'll take a closer look in the following weeks.
sounds intersting, its possible to import 3d-models form 3ds-max - but it costs real money and: I HATE 3DSMAX.
it's one thing i really like in secondlife, the editor, simple and easy to learn.
